NEW PASSENGER TERMINAL CONSTRUCTION

Master Plan

In 2021, ABC Orenburg (Airports of the Big Country), a joint venture between Airports of Regions MC and Novaport Holding) won the auction for buying a controlling stake in Orenburg International Airport Joint Stock Company.

The new owner is delivering a project of rebuilding the passenger terminal cluster. The total area of the new passenger terminal building will be at least 18,000 sq. m. The terminal’s handling capacity will be no less than 360 passengers per hour for domestic airlines and no less than 220 passengers per hour on international flights. The construction of boarding (jet) bridges for passengers of domestic and international lines and boarding gates to apron buses is anticipated. The revamping of the passenger terminal is due to be completed at the end of 2025.

The concept for the winning project was developed by the Cosmos architectural bureau. The architectural concept for the new terminal exterior is based on the prototypes of the traditional Orenburg lace shawl and on the nature of this region. The architectural concept of the building’s facades is built upon a structural modular grid, forming a light, openwork image of a lace shawl.

The façade solution of the building is pivoted on a spatial framework structure that allows large spaces to be covered or spanned with a small amount of building material, while ensuring rigidity and stability. In addition to its structural and technical qualities, this type of structure has a high degree of architectural expression and can shape the architectural and artistic appearance of both exterior and interior. The bright façade will become a new symbol of Orenburg, which will welcome residents and guests of the city with pomp.

The triangular forms and delicate lines of the exterior will extend to the interior of the new passenger terminal, thus blurring distinct boundaries between the outer and inner spaces and linking them together. The parametric design and contemporary materials will create an architecture that blurs the boundaries between interior and exterior. The interweaving of fine metal “threads” will create a truly airy interior.

The interiors of the new international terminal will have a classic monochrome colour scheme, with white as the predominant colour. The white supports the effect of transparency, characteristic of the airy and delicate lace.

The interior design presupposes accents, namely bright spots of colour, designating the public spaces: upholstered and harder workspaces for passengers and play zones for kids.
